Honbike has announced the U4, a new urban e-bike. The company specialises in low maintenance chain-free pedelecs, with a Gates belt drive used in the U4 model. Honbike says it has designed the bike for customers on a budget without compromising on features that e-bike fans love and need.

The company claims to cut costs through the bike's frame, fork and wheel hubs by replacing welding and heat treatment processes with die-casting technology. Plus, the frame is made from 7000 series aircraft-grade aluminum to keep it ultra-lightweight. A rear-mounted motor can assist you across three-speed modes; it is currently unclear what the power rating will be, though it will likely be 250 W to be EU regulation compliant. For this reason, the top speed is also expected to be capped at ~16 mph (25 kph).

The company claims that the bike can intelligently auto-select the right power level based on how you are pedalling. The pedelec is equipped with a 432 Wh battery, installed inside the bike's frame, providing up to 62 miles (~100 km) range between charges. The full specification of the Honbike U4 electric bike will be announced when it launches on July 13. From this date, customers in the UK will be able to order the pedelec for £1,599 (~US$1,909), with shipping due mid-August. It is expected that EU sales will follow shortly, and US customers can expect to be able to purchase the e-bike later this year.
